Pulldowns, Intent, and Getting Velocity Onto the Mound — Safely

Most pitchers never throw as hard as they actually can. On the mound they're managing command, the count, and a repeatable delivery, and all of that caps their output below their true ceiling. Pulldowns remove the constraints — a running start and one instruction: throw it as hard as humanly possible — to reveal and train top-end intent, which you then transfer back to the mound. Because it's the most demanding throwing a pitcher does, the workload rules matter as much as the drill itself. This guide covers the tracked pulldown intent-to-mound velocity transfer drill.
Why pulldowns transfer to mound velocity
A pulldown is a max-intent throw thrown after a running start, on a line, into a net. Driveline describes the purpose simply — "the point being to throw the ball on a line as hard as possible" — and notes the strong relationship between pulldown speed and mound speed: the correlation tops out around an R-squared of .7 between a running 5-oz throw and max-effort mound pitching, and "athletes that throw faster pulldowns see higher mound velocities" (source). PRP Baseball, working with its own athletes, found the average difference between pulldown and positional (mound) velocity to be about 5 mph (source). The training goal is to push the mound number up toward the pulldown number — to make more of your top-end available where it counts.
Intent is the skill
The reason pulldowns work is that they train intent — the willingness and ability to throw genuinely all-out. Driveline frames high-intent throwing as a deliberate, protective choice rather than a reckless one:

That framing is the heart of it: you build the capacity to throw hard, on purpose, in a controlled setting, so the body is prepared for the demand a game imposes anyway.
The workload rules are not optional
This is also the highest-stress throwing in any program, and the guardrails are what make it safe. Driveline caps the volume hard — "generally ... we are capping players at somewhere less than 10 high intent throws total" — with a full warm-up first and mandatory rest days between high-intent sessions (source). High-intent throwing should not be done three times a week; that's too much. The other guardrail is the radar gun itself: every throw is measured, and when velocity drops meaningfully (about 2 mph off the day's top), that's fatigue and the session is over. The number isn't just feedback for progress — it's an objective stop sign that protects the arm.
How the drill works
After a full warm-up, the pitcher throws roughly 8–10 crow-hop pulldowns at max intent, gunning each one, with full recovery between throws and a hard stop on the velo drop-off. Then comes the transfer ladder: a few flat-ground max throws, a few from a short box/short mound, then a few off the full mound — the same intent, carried down to game distance and angle. Common mistakes
The dangerous ones are all workload errors: throwing max before fully warm, chasing reps past the velo drop-off, treating this as an everyday drill, skipping the radar so fatigue is invisible, and scheduling it near a game or on a tired arm. The technical mistake is throwing "hard" with the arm only instead of letting a true running-start sequence pull the body through. If you can't recover the velocity, the session is done — full stop.
Age-appropriateness and arm care
This is advanced, max-stress work gated to mature pitchers — 15U and up — with a real strength base, a repeatable delivery, and an established throwing routine, and it belongs behind the higher access tier for that reason. It's an off-season builder above all; in-season it should be minimal and kept far from outings. Run it as one high-intent day inside a microcycle, with easy throwing and recovery work around it. Done on schedule, with a gun and a volume cap, pulldowns are a proven velocity tool. Done daily or to fatigue, they're an injury waiting to happen — the discipline is the drill.
