Blast Motion Bat Speed Training: A Coach and Parent Guide

Of all the hitting numbers a facility can chase, bat speed might be the most actionable, because it responds to training. A hitter can't easily will their eyes to be quicker, but they can absolutely make the barrel move faster — and faster barrel means harder contact, more carry, and a fraction more time to decide. The Blast Motion sensor, which clips to the bat knob and is the official bat sensor of Major League Baseball, turns bat speed from a vague impression into a number the hitter sees after every swing.

Why feedback changes everything
The core problem with coaching bat speed by eye is that feel lies. Driveline puts it bluntly:
"What an athlete feels is happening may not be exactly what is happening. It is not uncommon for MLB hitters to feel like they are swinging slower in order to hit the ball harder."
That's exactly why an objective sensor matters. When a hitter swings what feels like an all-out hack and the app says it was *slower* than a relaxed swing, the feedback rewires the goal. Driveline describes the payoff of that loop:

What Blast measures (the ones that matter here)
Blast reports a stack of metrics, but two carry this drill:
- Bat Speed — the speed of the bat's sweet spot at impact, measured six inches from the tip of the barrel. This is the headline number.
- Rotational Acceleration — how quickly the bat accelerates into the swing plane; a strong indicator of good sequencing. As Blast puts it, "Bat speed tells you how fast your barrel is moving at impact. Rotational acceleration in a baseball swing tells you how quickly you got there." Two hitters can reach the same top bat speed, but the one who builds it earlier (higher rotational acceleration) tends to be quicker and more repeatable.
Keep an eye on both: bat speed is the result, rotational acceleration is a big part of the *how*.
Bat speed benchmarks by age
These are Blast Motion's own published ranges, drawn from a swing database of hundreds of millions of swings. Note an important caveat: these are practice/tee swings, so don't compare them one-to-one with Statcast's live-game MLB numbers.
- 8-10 (youth): 30-45 mph
- 11-12 (~12U): 40-52 mph
- 13-14 (~14U): 46-62 mph
- 15-16 (HS JV): 55-65 mph
- 17-18 (HS varsity): 60-70 mph
- College: 65-75 mph
- Pro / MLB: 66-78 mph
For live-game context, Statcast pegs the MLB average game bat speed around 72 mph, with elite power hitters into the high 70s and beyond. Use the Blast age ranges to set honest goals; use the pro numbers to show a young hitter the ceiling.
How to actually build bat speed
Driveline's framework is get stronger, move more efficiently, and swing with intent — all monitored with the sensor. Two practical levers:
Swing with intent. During pure speed rounds, the goal is simply to move the bat faster than ever before, even at the cost of contact quality. Driveline: "The right intent is paramount when training for bat speed and, above all else, our goal when training is to move the bat faster than we ever have before." The sensor confirms whether the intent is translating.
Overload / underload training. Alternating a slightly heavier bat (overload, builds strength and efficiency) and a slightly lighter bat (underload, lets the body move faster than its normal ceiling) is a proven way to nudge bat speed up — the underload principle is, as Driveline describes, "similar to running downhill to improve sprinting speed." The key word is *slightly*: an overload bat heavy enough to wreck the swing pattern does more harm than good.
The motivating math to share with hitters: roughly one mph of bat speed equals about 1.2 mph of exit velocity equals around seven feet of distance. Small gains compound.
Is it age-appropriate?
Max-intent and overload work is more demanding than ordinary tee work, so this is best for roughly 12U and up once a hitter has a sound base swing. The movement load is moderate — it loads the trunk, lower back, and lead shoulder — so warm up well, keep overload weight modest, cap the volume, and rest between rounds. For younger hitters, build a clean swing first and let bat speed grow naturally before chasing the number aggressively.
The takeaway
Bat speed is trainable, and the Blast sensor makes it coachable by replacing feel with fact. Have the hitter swing with real intent, layer in modest overload/underload work, watch both bat speed and rotational acceleration, and track the weekly trend rather than the daily high. Do that, and the barrel gets faster — and a faster barrel is harder contact, more distance, and a better hitter.
