Wicket Runs: The Constraint Drill That Fixes Overstriding and Lowers the 60

Ask ten young ballplayers to "run faster" and most of them do the one thing that makes them slower: they reach the front foot way out in front of the body and pull themselves along. It feels powerful. It is actually a brake. Every time the foot lands well ahead of the hips, it sends force backward into the ground and the runner spends the next instant fighting their own stride. The runner builds smoothly into the row and runs over the sticks with one foot in each gap.
The magic is not the hurdles themselves - it is the spacing. Because each stick sits at a fixed distance, the athlete's foot is forced to come down in a specific place: underneath the hips, not out in front. Overstriding becomes physically impossible, because a foot that reaches too far clips a stick. The drill does not ask the runner to stop overstriding; it removes the option. The spacing enforces the foot-strike position, the low obstacles encourage the knee to come up and over rather than shuffle through, and the rhythm of one-foot-per-gap teaches a smooth, repeatable stride instead of a frantic, choppy one. In other words, the constraint trains the mechanical model of the exact phase where most of a 60 is won or lost. How the spacing works
The spacing is the whole drill, so it deserves care. Practically, that means starting conservative - a smaller gap for younger, shorter, or newer runners - and widening as the athlete gets faster and the pattern holds. Many coaches also progress the spacing within a session or across weeks: as top speed rises, the stride lengthens, and the wickets should grow with it. There is no single magic number; the athlete's clean, tall, rhythmic run over the row is the test of whether the spacing is right. If they are reaching or clipping, tighten; if they are chopping, widen.
Fitting it into practice
Wickets are a nervous-system and mechanics drill, not a conditioning grind. That shapes how you program them:
- Fresh, not fatigued. Run them early in a session after a full warm-up, when the athlete can actually move fast. Buried at the end of a hard practice or after a heavy lift, the reps get sloppy and the drill teaches the wrong pattern.
- Few, quality reps with full rest. Four to six runs with roughly two minutes of walk-back recovery keeps every rep genuinely fast. Speed work is about quality, not accumulating tired reps.
- Always finish with free sprinting. The point is transfer. Run off the last wicket into 10-plus yards of open sprinting so the athlete carries the pattern the sticks just built into unconstrained running. Periodically time a full 60 to confirm the mechanics are actually lowering the number.
- Pair it with the rest of the speed menu. Wickets sit nicely alongside acceleration work (wall drives, resisted starts), max-velocity work (flying sprints), and general strength and plyometrics. They are the technical piece that makes the fast running clean.
Age and safety
Fast running over obstacles loads the hamstrings hard, so this is a moderate-load drill with a sensible age floor. Full-effort wicket runs suit roughly 12U and up; younger athletes can absolutely use the row, but at a walk or jog to learn the rhythm rather than at speed.
