The Wicket Run: Coaching Faster 60-Yard Dash Mechanics With Wickets

The 60-yard dash is the single most-quoted athletic number in amateur baseball and softball. Recruiters ask for it, showcases post it, and players obsess over it. Yet most coaches treat it as a pure output — line them up, hit the watch, hope for a better time. The trouble is that you can't coach a stopwatch. You coach *movement*, and the stopwatch reports back. The wicket run is one of the cleanest tools we have for coaching the movement that makes a 60 fast.
Why foot strike is where the time hides
Ask a young athlete why their 60 is slow and they'll say "I need to get stronger" or "I need to be faster." Both may be true long-term, but on any given day the fastest, cheapest gains usually live in mechanics — specifically, in where the foot contacts the ground relative to the body.
When the foot lands *in front of* the center of mass, it creates a braking force. The athlete is literally stepping on the brakes a little on every stride. Multiply a small brake by the 30-plus ground contacts in a 60-yard dash and you have real, recoverable tenths of a second. The same is true of lateral drift (feet crossing or landing wide of the midline) and flat-footed "slapping" contacts that dissipate force instead of returning it.
Sprint researchers and coaches — the resources at Driveline Baseball and track-and-field coaching bodies like USA Track & Field and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) all emphasize the same fundamentals — describe efficient sprinting as tall posture, a dorsiflexed (toes-up) foot, and ground contact that happens underneath the hips with a vertical or near-vertical shin. The wicket run is a constraint drill that makes those things happen almost automatically.
What a wicket run actually is
"Wickets" are low mini-hurdles — 6 to 12 inches tall — set in an evenly spaced line. The athlete runs through them. Because the hurdles are placed at a fixed interval, they dictate stride length and cadence. Set the spacing correctly and the only way to run the line cleanly is with an even, rhythmic stride and a foot that lands in the right place. Set it wrong and the athlete clips hurdles, which is instant, honest feedback no coach has to shout.
That's the beauty of it as an *isolation* drill: the equipment coaches the pattern. Your job is to set good spacing, cue posture and foot action, and control the effort level.
How it fits into a practice or training block
The wicket run belongs in the early, fresh part of a session, right after the dynamic warmup and before any heavy conditioning or high-volume throwing. Skill learning requires a fresh nervous system; you cannot groove a cleaner movement pattern while gassed. Treat it like a skill, not a finisher.
A typical placement:
- Dynamic warmup (RAMP-style: raise, activate, mobilize, potentiate).
- Wicket run — 15-20 minutes, low total volume, full recovery.
- Whatever the day's main work is (position work, hitting, bullpen).
It pairs naturally with speed and acceleration blocks in the off-season and pre-showcase windows, and it makes an excellent primer even in-season because it's low fatigue and reinforces good movement before games.
Setting the spacing (the part coaches get wrong)
Spacing is everything. Too close and the athlete shuffles with choppy, over-quick steps; too far and they reach and over-stride — the exact fault we're trying to remove. A reliable starting point is center-to-center spacing of roughly 60-65% of the athlete's standing height, or a simple field default of about 5 to 5.5 feet for high-school-aged athletes and a bit less for younger or shorter players.
Then tune it. Watch one rep. If the athlete is reaching to get over each wicket, shorten the gap. If they're cramped and stuttering, lengthen it. The spacing is right when a *tall, comfortable* stride lands the foot cleanly in the middle of each gap with no reaching and no chopping. Different athletes on the same team will often need slightly different spacing — that's normal and worth the two minutes it takes to adjust.
Coaching the reps
Build from slow to fast, always:
- March through first. Toe up, knee up, tall, foot in the center of each gap. No clipped wickets.
- A-skip the line for rhythm and to feel the down-and-back foot strike.
- Run-throughs at ~80%, building to ~90% only as the pattern holds. Start 5-8 yards behind the first wicket so the athlete is up to a smooth speed before the first contact, and run *out the back* 15-20 yards.
- Fade the wickets — remove the last two or three and have the athlete hold the same stride onto open ground.
- Transfer to the 60 with one or two near-full efforts, cueing the identical feel.
Keep the intensity submaximal on the wicket portion. This surprises coaches, but you are teaching a motor pattern, and max effort recruits old, sloppy habits. The full-speed expression comes on the open-field transfer reps and on test day.
The cues that carry the most weight:
- "Toes up, step over the opposite ankle."
- "Strike down and back, right under your hip."
- "Run tall."
- "Over the line, not on both sides of it."
- "Same feel, faster."
Measuring it honestly
The drill trains one number: the 60-yard dash time (`dash_60yd_s`). Establish a baseline before you start a block, then re-time on open turf every two to three weeks. Time the same way every time — same surface, same start (rolling or static), same timing method (hand vs. laser gates differ by roughly 0.2-0.3 seconds, so never mix them). If mechanics are transferring, the number drops. If the wicket reps look clean but the 60 doesn't move, you're probably skipping the transfer reps or the athlete reverts to old feet at full speed — film the actual 60, not just the drill.
Age and safety notes
Running mechanics work is appropriate for a wide range of ages — this is submaximal, low-impact skill work, safe from about 12U up with age-appropriate spacing and volume. Younger athletes especially benefit because they're building the pattern before bad habits calcify. Keep three guardrails in place: a real dynamic warmup first, hurdles low enough (and light enough) to collapse harmlessly if clipped, and full recovery between reps. The moment form degrades, the set is over — quality is the whole point.
The takeaway for coaches
Speed on the 60 is not just a gift; a meaningful chunk of it is teachable mechanics, and foot strike is the highest-leverage piece. The wicket run turns an abstract cue like "don't over-stride" into a physical constraint the athlete can feel and self-correct against. Run it fresh, tune the spacing per athlete, keep the effort submaximal, and always cash it in with open-field transfer reps and a re-timed 60. Do that consistently through an off-season block and the stopwatch will tell the story.
