How to Coach the Home-to-Second Double With a Partner Split-Timer Station

Ask a coach how fast their fastest runner gets from home to second on a double and most can't tell you. They know the kid is "fast." They don't know the number. That gap is exactly why home-to-second time so rarely improves in a normal practice: nobody measures it, so nobody trains it on purpose. The Two-Runner Split-Timer Station closes that gap by turning a private stat into a spoken, tracked, competitive rep — and by putting the runner's teammates in charge of the clock.

Why the home-to-second double deserves its own drill
The home-to-second time is a clean, game-relevant number. It's the difference between a leadoff double and a single, between a runner in scoring position with nobody out and a runner clogging first. For high schoolers it typically lands in roughly the 7.4-8.2 second range; younger athletes on shorter basepaths will be faster in absolute terms but the mechanics are identical.
What makes it a distinct skill — separate from a straight home-to-first sprint — is the turn. A home-to-second double is not one sprint; it's two sprints joined by a directional change at first base. Runners lose the most time not on straight-line speed but on a sloppy, wide turn that adds distance and forces them to fight their own momentum back toward the infield. That's why a drill that only races the clock without isolating the turn misses the point, and why this station builds a first-base split into every rep.
What actually determines the time
There are three levers, and a good coach can see all three in a single timed rep:
1. The read and the decision. On a true double, the runner commits out of the box or within the first few steps. Hesitation — a half-second of "should I?" — is the most expensive mistake in baserunning because it happens at the start when the runner should be accelerating. Training a live read (ball in the gap) folds decision speed into the number.
2. The first-base turn. This is the make-or-break. The efficient path is a slight "belly out" 12-15 feet before the bag so the runner can cut the inside corner in a tight arc, clip the inside edge of the base, and lean their chest toward the infield. The two failure modes are a wide banana loop (too much distance) and an over-tight, choppy approach where the runner short-steps to hit the corner perfectly and loses stride length and speed. The split spotter exists to catch exactly this.
3. Holding speed through second. Runners routinely decelerate two or three steps early to "find" the bag. The cue is to run through a fixed spot and touch the base at full speed under control. On a live double the runner reads the throw late; in the drill we simplify to a clean run-through so the sprint mechanics stay honest.
Why a partner/team station beats a coach-and-a-line
The traditional version — a coach with a stopwatch and a line of ten kids — produces one engaged athlete and nine spectators. The station format solves three problems at once.
First, feedback is immediate and specific. The timer reads two numbers out loud after every rep: the first-base split and the home-to-second total. A runner who hears "split 4.3, home-to-second 7.9" and then "split 4.2, home-to-second 7.7" learns instantly that a tighter turn moved the number. That's the fast feedback loop that motor-learning research consistently ties to skill acquisition.
Second, accountability lives with the pod. When a teammate owns the stopwatch, the runner can't quietly coast. Untimed effort is the single biggest reason baserunning times never move; the station makes every rep count without the coach having to police it.
Third, everyone is working. In a pod of three or four, athletes rotate Runner, Timer, and Split Spotter. Even in the "off" roles they're reading turns, judging arcs, and internalizing what a good rep looks like — which is real learning, not standing in line.
Running it in practice
Keep pods small (3-4). Set the bases at regulation distance for the age group. Each pod needs one stopwatch or phone; a second timer for the split is a bonus, but a trained spotter's eye and call is enough to start. Put a cone on the inside corner of first to mark the target path, and a second cone about 15 feet short of the bag as the "start your turn" marker.
Trigger the rep with a read whenever you can — a coach flips or hits a ball into the right-center gap, or the runner takes a dry swing on the word "ball." The timer starts on first movement out of the box (not on the swing) and stops when the runner touches second. Rotate one role clockwise after each rep so nobody sits.
Budget 45-60 seconds of full rest between a runner's timed reps. This matters: home-to-second is a max-effort sprint with a hard cut, and fatigued reps produce both slower times and sloppier mechanics — the opposite of what you want to reinforce. Four to six quality timed reps per runner in a 20-minute block is plenty.
Progressing it across a season
Start in the learn phase with walk-throughs and no clock, so the pod nails where the watch starts and stops and what the arc feels like. Move to a baseline phase — timed reps at about 85% to record each runner's rolling-best split and total without max-effort risk before they're fully conditioned. Then open the compete phase: two-lane chase races on a single trigger, where each runner is chasing their own best time, not just the kid next to them. Finally, layer in game-real reads — the coach hits to different gaps and the runner only goes for two on a genuine gap ball, so the decision and the sprint train together.
Track the numbers. A runner who can see their home-to-second time drop from 8.0 to 7.7 over a few weeks has a concrete, motivating reason to keep attacking the turn. That's the whole point: measure it, race it, and it moves.
