Arm Care Starts With the Shoulder Blades: A Coach's Guide to Scapular Control

The Foundation Everyone Skips
When a young thrower's shoulder starts barking, the instinct is to blame the shoulder itself. But experienced arm-care coaches will tell you to look one piece lower in the chain — at the shoulder blade. The scapula is the platform the entire arm operates from, and if it can't be controlled, the arm has no stable base to fire from.
The scapula doesn't sit still during a throw. It glides, tilts, and rotates in coordination with the arm. For the arm to reach overhead cleanly, the shoulder blade has to rotate upward to meet it — and it has to do that on every single throw. Elite Baseball Performance's Travis Hash explains the stakes plainly:
"If the scapula is unable to move close to a 2:1 ratio with the shoulder, then we are going to be limited with how far we can move our arm. In other words: a shoulder blade that doesn't move and stabilize well forces the shoulder and elbow to pick up the slack — and those joints pay the price.
Posture Is Part of the Picture
There's a second reason the scaps matter, and it's visible in the way a lot of young athletes stand: rounded forward, shoulders slumped, head jutting ahead. That posture is partly a strength problem. The muscles that retract and stabilize the shoulder blades — the mid and low traps, the rhomboids — get weak and stretched out, while the chest gets tight. The YTW family of exercises is widely used precisely because it targets those between-the-blade muscles to pull the shoulders back and restore upright posture.
For a thrower, better posture isn't cosmetic. A shoulder blade that sits in a good resting position can rotate and stabilize far more effectively when the arm goes overhead. Fixing posture and building scapular control are the same project.
Why Prone Y-T-W
The prone (face-down) Y, T, and W is a staple of throwing programs because it isolates the right muscles in the right order. Research on scapular stabilizers consistently shows that prone overhead raises and rows produce high activity in the mid and low trapezius — exactly the muscles throwers under-train. The letters map cleanly onto the targets:
- Y trains the low trapezius, the muscle that helps rotate the blade upward and is the biggest weak link in most throwers.
- T hits the mid trap and rhomboids that pull the blades together.
- W reinforces retraction and downward rotation control.
- A serratus punch is added because the serratus anterior keeps the blade flat against the ribcage — without it, the blade "wings" off the back.

How to Coach It
The single most important cue is the blade *set*: before every rep, slide the shoulder blades "down and back," then lead the movement with the blade rather than the hand. Most players, especially younger ones, will instinctively yank their arms up with the hands and shrug toward the ears — which trains the upper trap, the muscle that's already overactive in throwers. Slow them down, keep the load light or bodyweight, and watch the blades, not the hands.
This is also a place where less is more. The point is control, not how high the arms lift. A clean rep with a stable blade beats a high rep with a shrug every time.
Common Mistakes
- Lifting with the hands. The blade should initiate. If the hand leads, the wrong muscles fire.
- Shrugging. Upper-trap dominance is the enemy here. Keep the neck long and the shoulders away from the ears.
- Too much weight. Load that wrecks the blade set defeats the drill. Bodyweight first.
- Arching the back. Cheating the arms higher by arching the lower back just hides a lack of control.
- Rushing. The slow lowering builds endurance in the stabilizers. Don't skip it.
Age-Appropriateness
This is low-load, controlled work, which makes it safe and useful for nearly any age that throws. In fact, scapular control work is some of the best arm care you can give a young athlete because it builds good habits and good posture before bad ones set in. With kids, expect the lifts to look small at first — that's the muscles waking up — and keep it light, slow, and technical.

A healthy throwing arm is built on a stable, well-positioned shoulder blade. Train the scaps, fix the posture, and the shoulder and elbow stop having to do work they were never meant to do. Spend ten minutes a few times a week on the prone Y-T-W posture circuit, lead every rep with the blades, and give your arm the foundation it deserves.
