The Most Important Muscles No One Talks About
Ask a young player what makes a strong arm and they'll point to the muscles that throw the ball *forward* — the chest, the lats, the front of the shoulder. Those are the accelerators. But the muscles that decide whether an arm stays healthy season after season are on the *back* of the shoulder, and they do the opposite job: they slow the arm down.
The rotator cuff is a group of four small muscles — supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis — that wrap the shoulder and hold the ball of the arm centered in its socket. Two of them, the infraspinatus and teres minor, are the primary external rotators, and during a throw they fire hard to decelerate the arm after release. Overhead throwing is one of the most violent, repetitive movements in sport. Over a season, the accelerating muscles tend to get strong simply from throwing, while the small decelerators fall behind. That imbalance — strong engine, weak brakes — is a recipe for the shoulder problems that sideline pitchers and position players alike.

Make it a calm, technical habit rather than a competition.
