Medicine Ball Drills for Exit Velocity: The Rotational Shotput

If you want a hitter to hit the ball harder, you have two levers: a faster bat and a better-sequenced body delivering that bat to the ball. The medicine ball is the cleanest tool we have for training the second one. Among medicine ball drills for exit velocity, the rotational shotput is the staple — a side-on, max-effort throw into a wall that grooves the exact order the swing fires in: legs drive, hips rotate, the front leg braces, and the trunk whips through out front.
Why a throw teaches a swing
Exit velocity is the product of bat speed *and* how efficiently the body delivers it. A young hitter can be strong and still hit weak fly balls if the segments fire in the wrong order — chest before hips, or no ground force at all. The shotput throw forces the right sequence because you physically can't throw a ball hard sideways without driving off the ground and leading with the lower half. That is the swing, described as a throw. Train the throw and you train the engine behind the swing.
The research actually backs it
This isn't just gym-bro folklore. A peer-reviewed study in the *Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research* tested NCAA Division III players and found rotational med-ball throw velocity tracked with how hard they swung and hit:

An r of 0.65 is a meaningful relationship for a single field test. The med ball isn't a magic wand, but a hitter who throws it harder tends to swing it and hit it harder — which is exactly why it earns a spot on power days.
How to run it (the short version)
The full setup, cues, and progressions live in the rotational med-ball shotput drill, but here's the shape of it.
Stand side-on to a solid wall, about three to four feet away, like you're facing a pitcher. Hold the ball at your back hip. Load gently into the back leg with your chest stacked over your belt — no leaning back. Then drive off the back leg into a firm front leg and throw the ball as hard as you can through your chest, finishing belly-button-to-the-wall. Reset and repeat. Three to five sets of three to five throws per side, with real rest, so every rep is full speed.

That one sentence should govern your weight selection.
Picking the right ball weight (the parent question)
The most common mistake parents and young athletes make is going too heavy. A heavy ball *feels* like harder work, but it slows the movement down, and a slow throw teaches a slow swing. For 12U–14U athletes, a 4–6 lb ball is plenty; older, stronger high-schoolers can use 6–8 lb. The test is simple: if the ball doesn't rocket off the wall, it's too heavy. Drop down and chase speed.
Loading caution matters here. This is a rotational, max-effort movement, so warm the trunk and hips up first, throw into a solid wall with a clear lane, and stop at any sign of low-back or oblique strain. Done with a light ball and good rest, it's low-risk — the danger comes from a too-heavy ball and a cold, twisting torso.
Where it fits in a power program
Use the shotput as a primer on power days: throw three to five max-intent reps, then immediately take aggressive swings off the tee while the lower half is awake. In the off-season it's a foundational rotational-power builder; in showcase prep it doubles as a warm-up that wakes up the sequence before a hitter steps in to chase a radar number. It works identically for baseball and softball — the hips-lead, trunk-follows sequence is the same regardless of the implement at the plate.
Measure what you can. Chart how far the ball rebounds round to round, and — if you have a radar — pair it with a handful of tee swings so the athlete can see the carryover from throw to exit velo. Watching the number climb is what turns a drill into a habit.
