Resisted-Band Catcher Framing: A Coach's Guide to Overload/Underload Receiving

Pitch framing is the highest-leverage skill a catcher owns that never shows up in a box score. A catcher who turns borderline takes into called strikes can be worth more runs than most of what happens with the bat. The problem is that framing is hard to *train* - most catchers get a few "stick it" reminders and a bucket of pitches, and the move never really changes. This guide lays out a different approach: an overload/underload resisted-band framing drill that treats the receiving hand the way velocity coaches treat the arm and bat-speed coaches treat the barrel.
Why framing is worth training at all
The public research on framing is unambiguous. When Baseball Prospectus analysts (notably Mike Fast, then later Harry Pavlidis and Jonathan Judge) first quantified receiving, they found the best framers were saving their teams dozens of runs a season purely by how they caught the ball - a spread of two or three wins between elite and poor receivers over a full year. MLB's Statcast now publishes a public Catcher Framing leaderboard built on "Strike Rate," the share of takes in the shadow zone (the edges) that a catcher converts into called strikes. That shadow-zone strike rate is exactly what our drill's success metric mirrors at the amateur level: framing strike percentage on borderline pitches.
The takeaway for coaches is simple. Framing is a real, measurable skill with a real run value, and the entire battle is fought on the edges of the zone - not down the middle, where every catcher looks good, and not off the plate, where nothing helps. So we train the edges, one at a time.
The overload/underload idea, applied to the glove
Overload/underload training is well established for developing bat and arm speed: you move a slightly heavier implement to recruit force and control, then a slightly lighter one to express speed, and the nervous system splits the difference into a faster, cleaner movement. Driveline Baseball built much of its reputation on weighted-ball and weighted-bat variants of this principle, and Per Anthon Lehman-style plyo and med-ball work uses the same logic.
Framing is a movement skill too - a short, precise, controlled receive-and-present that has to be quiet under fatigue. So we overload it. A light resistance band anchored to the glove-hand wrist makes the catcher receive the pitch and "stick" it back toward the zone against tension. The receiving muscles - forearm, wrist, rotator cuff, and the small stabilizers that keep the glove still - have to work to hold the picture. Then you take the band off. The identical move now feels weightless, and catchers almost universally report the glove feeling "quicker" and "quieter" on the band-off reps. That underload set is where the skill transfers to the game.
Two hard rules keep this safe and effective. First, the band goes around the wrist, never the fingers - finger tension changes the catch and stresses the hand. Second, use the lightest band you own. Heavy tension makes catchers muscle and jab at the ball, which is the exact opposite of a good frame. If the catcher is grunting, the band is too heavy.
How the drill runs
Set the catcher in a one-knee or primary stance behind a marked zone. Loop the light band from a low, slightly-outside anchor to the glove wrist so it resists the direction the glove travels when it presents the ball into the zone. Pick one edge per set - low at the knees, glove-side corner, or arm-side corner - because framing mechanics differ by location and mixing them early just muddies the rep.
The move itself: beat the glove to the catch point so you are receiving the ball *moving toward the zone*, rotate the thumb slightly under so the pocket funnels the bottom of the ball back to the middle, stick it a hair inside the edge, and freeze - hold the picture for a full one-count with a still head. Do eight resisted reps per edge, then strip the band and fire off a band-off "underload" set on the catcher's weakest edge, chasing a lightning-quick, silent stick.
Finish every session with a blind-call block: a coach or teammate stands in the umpire slot and calls ten edge pitches with no knowledge of where they were actually thrown. Count how many the catcher turns into strikes. That number - the framing strike percentage - is your scoreboard, and it is the one metric this drill is built to move.
Coaching cues that land
- "Beat the glove to the spot - catch it moving toward the zone, never away from it."
- "Turn the thumb under and funnel the bottom of the ball back to the middle."
- "Stick it and hold the picture - freeze for one full count."
- "Band off, same move, twice as quiet and half the effort."
The quiet is the whole thing. A great frame is boring to watch. If the catcher's body is bouncing, the head is dropping, or the glove is being yanked across the zone, the umpire's brain flags it as a ball no matter where the mitt ends up. Modern umpires - and the automated ball-strike systems now filtering into pro and college - reward a glove that simply arrives early and stays still.
Common mistakes
The biggest one is over-pulling: a dramatic tug of a clearly-off pitch toward the middle. It fools no one and it costs strikes on the pitches that were actually close. The frame is subtle. The second is a dead, late glove that lets the pitch push the mitt out of the zone before it sticks - the fix is beating the glove to the spot. The third is a heavy band, which turns a soft receive into a jab. And the fourth is skipping the band-off underload set to save time; the resisted reps build the control, but the light reps are what show up in the game.
Where it fits in practice
This is a short, high-focus block - about 20 minutes - that fits in-season on a bullpen day or off-season as part of a catcher's dedicated defense work. It pairs naturally with a bullpen: the pitcher gets his command work while the catcher banks framing reps on live edges. For showcase prep, filming the blind-call block from the umpire's-eye view gives a recruit concrete evidence - a strike percentage on borderline pitches - rather than a vague "good receiver" label. Progress the drill from static holds, to resisted single-edge receives, to band-off speed reps, to mixed-edge blind-call reps, and finally to game-tempo reps with a baserunner cue so the catcher frames under the same split-attention a game demands.
Train the glove like you train the barrel and the arm: load it, then let it fly. The catcher who does this a few times a week stops hoping for close calls and starts earning them.
