How to Coach the Reaction-Cued Home-to-Second Double

Ask any coach what stretches a single into a double and you'll hear "speed." That's only half true. Plenty of fast players get thrown out at second, and plenty of average runners get in standing up. The difference is usually the first second off the bat — the read and the commit. A runner who decides late gives back tenths of a second that no amount of raw wheels can recover. The Green-Light Double drill is built to train that first second, then hold the runner accountable with a stopwatch. The single number it produces, home_to_second_s, captures reaction plus mechanics in one clean measurement.
Why the read matters more than the sprint
Home-to-second time is a standard showcase and evaluation metric because it strips baserunning down to a repeatable number. But most timing drills quietly cheat the game: the runner knows they're going before they move, so they pre-load a perfect jump. In a real at-bat, that jump is contaminated by a decision — is the ball through the gap? did it hang up in the outfield? is the coach sending me? Every one of those reads costs time, and if the runner rehearses only the clean version, they never train the part that actually slows them down on Saturday.
Human reaction to a visual stimulus takes roughly 0.2 to 0.3 seconds before the body even begins to move, and that latency grows when a *choice* is involved (go vs. hold) rather than a simple "go on any signal." The National Strength and Conditioning Association describes this as the difference between simple and choice reaction time, and choice reaction is the trainable, game-relevant version. By forcing the runner to distinguish a green cue from a red decoy at the moment of contact, this drill trains choice reaction directly — and the clock rewards runners who shrink it.
The mechanics that live inside the number
Once the runner commits, home-to-second time is decided by three things:
- The jump out of the box — a low, aggressive first few steps with both arms driving, not a tall pop-up or a head-fake toward the outfield.
- The route through first — banking the inside corner and brushing the bag, rather than swinging wide and adding distance. A wide turn can add several feet, and feet become tenths.
- The finish — accelerating through the last strides and committing to the bag or the slide, instead of gearing down early to "find" the base.
Driveline Baseball and other player-development groups have popularized breaking sprint-based skills into measurable segments; the same logic applies here. When you record home_to_second_s on every green rep and note the route quality, you can tell whether a slow time came from a late read, a fat turn at first, or a coast at the end — and coach the specific fault instead of just yelling "faster."
How the drill fits into a practice
The Green-Light Double is a quality-over-quantity block. Because it's a maximal, reactive sprint, it belongs early in practice after a full dynamic warm-up, when legs and nervous system are fresh — not tacked onto the end when players are gassed. Fatigue inflates times and, worse, degrades mechanics, so the number stops meaning anything.
Run it in short sets: 3-4 sets of two timed green reps, sprinkled with red decoy reps to keep the read honest, and 60-90 seconds of recovery between timed efforts. Twenty minutes is plenty. The recovery is not optional — reaction and top-speed work are trained rested, the same way you'd program acceleration sprints, not conditioning. If you want a conditioning effect, run a separate finisher; don't turn this drill into it.
A practical setup note: use a consistent start trigger. Start the clock on the runner's first movement (the simulated swing) and stop it on contact with second base. Whatever you choose, keep it identical across sessions so times are comparable. A phone timer works; laser gates are better if you have them; a second coach as a dedicated timer is worth the manpower.
Keeping the reaction honest
The fastest way to ruin this drill is to let runners anticipate. If a runner leaves before the card flips, the rep is dead — re-run it. Vary the delay between "Ready" and the cue (one to three seconds, randomized) so there's no rhythm to lock onto. Mix red and green roughly evenly so "hold" is a real possibility every time. When runners know a wrong read or an early jump erases the rep, they stop guessing and start actually reading, which is the entire point.
Red reps aren't wasted, either. A hard single with a clean run-through of first is good baserunning too, and it reinforces that the decision — not the effort — is what changes. You're building a player who runs hard every time and reads correctly every time.
How to progress it
Start simple: a still cue-giver, a longer predictable delay, and no slide, so young or new runners groove the jump and the route. Layer in the randomized delay and red decoys as the read gets reliable. To make it look like a game, replace the card with a rolled ball to a gap (green = it gets through) or have the runner pick up a coach at first base mid-route who sends or holds them. Now the decision extends past the box and the runner has to keep processing while sprinting — the most game-like version.
Track progress against the runner's own clean-route baseline. If a rested runner can post, say, a clean-jump home-to-second time in practice, the goal over weeks is to close the gap between that baseline and their reactive time. Shrinking that gap is measurable proof the read is getting faster — which is the outcome no ordinary timing drill can show you.
Age and safety notes
This is a moderate-load drill: full-effort sprinting plus an optional slide. Teach sliding as its own skill first, use a proper surface or sliding mat, and only add it once technique is sound. USA Softball and USA Baseball both emphasize progressive teaching of sliding to reduce lower-limb injury, so don't rush it with younger athletes. Twelve-and-under is a reasonable youngest age for the sprint-only version with a still cue; save the slide and the busy live-ball reads for older, better-conditioned players.
