That's a problem, because contact - the simple ability to put the barrel on the ball and get it in play - is the single most game-relevant hitting skill for the vast majority of amateur players, and you can't improve what you never measure. Why contact rate deserves its own drill
Strikeouts are the most damaging routine outcome for an amateur hitter. A ball in play forces the defense to make a play, advances runners, and at the youth level produces a large share of hits simply because defenses aren't perfect. A strikeout produces nothing. Yet most cage work quietly optimizes for exit velocity and launch angle - hitters take huge, grooved cuts at predictable feeds and feel great, then walk into a game and swing through pitches they never tracked. The gauntlet re-centers the practice on the outcome that actually correlates with amateur run production: did you put the barrel on the ball?
This is not an argument against power work. Bat speed and exit velocity matter, and they have their own drills. It's an argument that contact is a distinct, trainable skill that deserves its own dedicated, measured reps - especially in-season and before tryouts or showcases where a hitter needs to look competitive in the box.
The key ingredient: uncertainty
The reason this drill works is that the feeder randomizes location and, when possible, speed. That single design choice is grounded in one of the most robust findings in motor-learning research: variable and random practice produces worse-looking practice sessions but far better retention and transfer to competition than blocked, repetitive practice. When a hitter takes 20 identical pitches down the middle, they can groove a swing without ever solving the real problem of a game at-bat - reading a pitch and adjusting to it. When every pitch could be in, out, up, or down, the hitter is forced to see the ball, decide, and adjust every single rep. That is the exact skill that transfers.

Why a machine (or front toss)
A pitching machine gives you two things a coach's arm can't: consistent velocity and the ability to change one variable at a time. You can hold speed constant and randomize only location, then later add a speed change deliberately. It also lets a hitter get many quality reps in a short window, which matters when you're trying to build a stable contact number across several rounds.
For younger hitters (roughly 12U) or anyone new to machines, front toss from behind an L-screen is the right starting point. The coach can still randomize location by hand, the ball comes in on a readable arc, and there's no intimidation factor. The scoring and the logic are identical; only the delivery changes. This is why the drill lists a youngest-safe age of 12U with front toss, and treats the machine as the progression rather than the entry point.
Running it safely
Machine safety is non-negotiable and simple. Feed only from behind an L-screen or protective net, and keep everyone except the hitter well clear of the cage. Start the machine slow. The goal at the opening speed is that when a hitter misses, it's because they didn't track or adjust - not because they were overpowered. Raise the speed only after the hitter proves they can square the ball up at the current setting. A machine that's too hot doesn't build contact; it builds flinching and bailing, which are the opposite of what you want.
The movement load is moderate: these are full, game-intent swings, so treat volume with respect. Three to four rounds of 20 competitive strikes with real rest between them is plenty. This is not a fatigue drill; a tired hitter's contact rate falls for reasons that have nothing to do with skill, and you'll pollute the number you're trying to measure.
Scoring it honestly
The scoreboard only works if the standard is honest. Count a rep as "made contact" only when the hitter squares the ball up with the barrel and puts it in play into the net or field. Swing-and-miss, foul tip, and the weak top- or bottom-edge contact that would be a routine out don't count. Skip any wild feed that isn't a competitive strike - you're measuring the hitter, not the machine. A clean example: 15 put in play out of 20 strikes is a 75% contact rate for that round.
Writing the number down is part of the drill, not an afterthought. The recorded number does three jobs. It gives the hitter a concrete target to beat, which raises focus and effort. It gives the coach a trend line across rounds and across weeks. And it gives honest feedback that cuts through the "I've been seeing it well" fog - if the number is 55%, the hitter now knows exactly what to work on.
A realistic standard and how to progress
A good working benchmark for an intermediate hitter is putting at least 15 of 20 randomized strikes in play - a 75% contact rate - and raising the number as the session goes on. Once a hitter clears roughly 80% at a given speed, progress the challenge: bump the machine up a notch, widen the location spread to the edges of the zone to stress plate coverage, or add a two-strike round where the hitter chokes up and simply protects, aiming for an even higher put-in-play rate. If the machine supports it, mix in a random slower feed so the hitter has to stay back and still make contact - the beginning of true pitch-speed recognition.
The last progression is the most important: repeat the exact scoring during live batting practice or a game-like at-bat series. The whole point of building contact under uncertainty is that it shows up when it counts. If a hitter's cage contact rate climbs but their live rate doesn't follow, you've learned something valuable about where the gap really is.
Where it fits in a practice
Use the gauntlet in-season as a sharp, competitive block that keeps contact skill honest without heavy volume, and in the off-season as a measured way to track improvement over weeks. It pairs naturally after a tee or soft-toss warm-up and before or instead of unstructured free BP. Because it's scored and quick, it's also excellent showcase and tryout prep: a hitter who has trained contact under random feeds walks into an unfamiliar box far more prepared to simply put the ball in play.
