How to Train Infield Throwing Velocity With a Partner Station

Ask most coaches how they train infield arm strength and the honest answer is: they don't, at least not on purpose. Infielders take dozens of ground balls a day, but the throw at the end is almost always a controlled, sub-maximal flip to first. Reps stack up, the number on the radar never moves, and everyone wonders why the shortstop who can pick anything still can't make the deep-hole throw in a game. Velocity across the diamond — what A-City tracks as inf_velo_mph — is a specific, trainable quality, and it only improves when you train it with intent and measure it.

Why measured, max-intent throws matter
Velocity is governed by a simple principle that shows up across the throwing-development literature: the body organizes its output around intent. If every throw is a lob, the nervous system grooves a lob. If you ask for — and measure — a hard, accurate throw, the athlete recruits more of the lower half, sequences the hips and trunk more aggressively, and finishes the arm with more speed. The second reason this station works is engagement. A passive throwing line produces bored players and slow throws. Put a teammate in charge of the tempo and the number, add a little competition, and effort goes up on its own. Players will chase a number their partner just called out far harder than a number a coach writes on a clipboard they never see.
The mechanics that actually add infield velo
Infield velocity is not just arm — it's what the feet and hips deliver to the arm. Three things separate a plus infield arm from an average one, and this drill trains all three:
- Momentum through the ball. The best infielders are moving toward their target as they field. A throw made from a dead stop leaves velocity on the table because there's no ground force feeding the throw. The Feeder's job is to deliver hops that let the Gun field on the move.
- A quick, clean transfer and a full arm path. Velocity dies when players short-arm the ball to be quick. The fix is a compact but complete arm circle — the hand gets on top and finishes down and through. Short-arming is also where a lot of elbow stress hides, so cleaning it up is both a velo and a health win.
- Lower-half and trunk sequencing. The crow-hop or replace-step is where the legs load and the hips fire. Cue "legs first, arm last" so the throw is the end of a chain, not an all-arm heave.
Because the drill counts only throws that hit a chest-high target box, players can't cheat velocity with a wild throw. That accuracy constraint is what keeps the number transferable to the game.
How to run the station
Set a throwing lane at real infield distance — about 90–100 feet (shortstop-to-first) for 14U and older, shorter for younger or recovery days. Put a target net with a taped 2-foot box at chest height at one end, and a radar unit (a pocket radar, stalker gun, or Rapsodo/HitTrax infield mode) directly behind it. Give the Feeder a bucket of eight to ten balls.
The Gun sets in a pre-pitch athletic position. The Feeder rolls a controlled grounder; the Gun fields through it with momentum, uses a quick crow-hop, and fires a max-effort accurate throw at the box. The Feeder reads the radar, calls the number out loud, and feeds the next ball within five to seven seconds. After eight throws, the Gun's round score is the average of their top three velocities that also hit the box. Players swap and repeat for three or four rounds each, then finish with a fully-rested five-throw "peak" round chasing a single new top number.
That average-of-top-three scoring is deliberate. A single lucky reading is noise; an average of the best accurate throws is a stable number you can compare week to week and put on a leaderboard.
Where it fits in practice
The Gauntlet is a station, not a whole practice. Drop it into a fielding circuit while you run ground-ball work, double-play feeds, or a hitting rotation elsewhere. Two players run it independently, which is exactly the point — it frees the coach. In a four-player version, run two lanes side by side and let the round averages compete, with the Feeders relaying balls to keep the interval tight.
Because it's max-intent throwing, treat it like arm work, not conditioning. Run it early in practice when arms are fresh and warm, not at the end when players are fatigued and mechanics fall apart. Two to three times a week is plenty for the velocity stimulus to accumulate without overloading the arm.
Progressing it safely
Start every athlete with a regression: shorten the distance, drop the radar for the first round, and let them groove the field-and-transfer before adding intent. From the baseline lane, add game context by mixing forehand, backhand, and slow-roller feeds so footwork varies. The advanced version is the competitive team format above.
The safety piece is non-negotiable. Max-effort throwing is a real arm load. Require a full dynamic warmup, band and arm-care activation, and a build-up throwing progression before any measured throw — the same on-ramp any responsible throwing program uses. This is not a station for pre-adolescent (under-14) players at max effort; younger athletes should train the footwork and clean transfer at submaximal intent and shorter distance.
