Why a short arm path caps velocity

When an outfielder short-arms the ball — keeping the hand up near the ear and shoving it forward — that runway disappears. There is no time or distance for the arm to accelerate, so even a strong athlete with a good crow hop leaves velocity on the field. The ball comes out flat, slows down, and one-hops the cutoff instead of carrying to the base.
The fix is a longer, cleaner arm action: the hand breaks *down, back, and up* in a full circle, reaching extension behind the body before whipping up and over into a high three-quarter slot. That longer path gives the arm room to build speed, and it lets the momentum from the crow hop actually reach the ball. The problem is that telling a player to "get long" rarely works — under game tempo they snap right back to the short shove. That is where a constraint earns its keep.
Why a constraint beats a verbal cue

The athlete self-organizes around the constraint and learns the feel implicitly, which tends to hold up better under pressure than a swing-thought.
A batting tee is the perfect constraint here. Set it up and slightly to the throwing side at about shoulder height, so a full arm circle has to travel up and over the top of it. Now a short shove over the ear literally cannot happen — the only path that clears the gate is a long, relaxed arm swing with the hand finishing on top. The player does not have to *think* about getting long; the tee makes it automatic. 1. Warm up, every time
Max-intent throwing on a cold arm is how arms get hurt. Before any hard throw: a light jog, dynamic shoulder mobility, rotator-cuff band work, and a progressive catch-play build-up. Arm care is non-negotiable, especially with a velocity-chasing drill.
2. Take a baseline
Make three to five normal crow-hop throws and record the average velocity on the radar. This is the number the athlete is trying to beat. Without a baseline you cannot tell whether the constraint is working.
3. Set the gate and throw over it
Position the tee so a full arm circle clears it. Field or catch the ball, break the hand down, back, and up around the outside of the tee, crow hop to feed the legs into the throw, and whip the arm up and over into a high slot, releasing out front and finishing downhill on a line. Read the radar out loud after every throw. Take six to eight reps per set, resetting fully between them.
4. Remove the tee and transfer
After two or three constrained sets, pull the tee and make four to six free crow-hop throws while keeping the same long path. Compare the radar to the baseline. The whole point is carryover — the clean long-arm action has to survive when the gate is gone.
Common mistakes
- Short-arming over the ear. If the hand cuts inside the tee, reset and go long. The constraint only helps if the athlete respects it.
- Slowing down to be neat. This is a velocity drill. Clearing the gate at half speed defeats the purpose — intent stays high.
- Killing the lower half. No crow hop turns it into an all-arm throw and caps the radar number. The legs start the throw.
- Dropping to a low sidearm slot. Sneaking *under* the tee adds arm stress and kills carry. The gate should promote a high three-quarter slot, not a submarine one.
- Chasing the gun through fatigue. When arm speed or mechanics fade, the session is over. Tired max-effort throwing is a leading injury risk.
Programming it across the year
This drill is most valuable in the off-season and in showcase-prep blocks, when an athlete can throw with high intent and full recovery without game wear. Younger arms should lower the tee, shorten the distance, cap the volume, and prioritize a clean path over the radar number. As mechanics and strength improve, raise the tee toward shoulder height, extend the distance to 90–120 feet, and add a fielding action — a drop-step catch or a do-or-die charge — in front of each throw so the long path holds up at game tempo.
