Why velocity is worth measuring at all
An outfielder’s value on a throw is a race: the ball versus the runner. Two things win that race — how fast the ball leaves the hand and how flat it carries. The rung checkpoint is then something like “3 of 5 quality throws within 2–3 mph of baseline.” This keeps the athlete honest inside a single session and stops them from skipping stages.
Personal-best (across-session gate). The longer-term target is the athlete’s verified best outfield velocity. When they clear the top rung on a new personal best, that number becomes the next session’s baseline, so the whole ladder ratchets upward over weeks. The key coaching discipline is that the checkpoint is objective. The trajectory trap
Velocity training can quietly wreck an outfielder’s throw if you let the athlete arc the ball to gas the radar. A ball thrown on a high loop can read faster off the hand while being useless in a game, because it arrives late and can’t be cut off.
