The Plant-and-Line Drill: Adding Outfield Throwing Velocity With Better Footwork

Ask a young outfielder to throw harder and watch what happens: the arm speeds up, the release gets violent, and the ball goes roughly the same speed it always did — sometimes slower. That is because outfield throwing velocity is not primarily an arm problem. It is a footwork and momentum problem. The Plant-and-Line drill exists to prove that to a player in the most direct way possible: by putting a radar gun on their throws and showing them, rep by rep, how many miles per hour their feet are actually worth.
This guide explains why the drill works, how to run it, how to fit it into a practice plan, and how to progress and regress it for different ages and skill levels.
Why footwork drives outfield velocity
A throw is a kinetic chain — a sequence in which energy is created by the big, slow parts of the body (legs and hips) and transferred up through the trunk into the fast, small parts (shoulder, forearm, hand). Player-development groups like Driveline Baseball and researchers at the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) have described throwing this way for years: the ball's speed at release is the sum of everything that happened *before* the arm, not just the arm itself.
For an outfielder, the "everything before the arm" is footwork. The plant foot sets the direction the energy travels. The momentum step (often called a crow-hop or shuffle) turns standing still into moving toward the target. The back hip loads and then rotates, feeding the trunk. If any of those links point the wrong way — a plant foot opening to the side, a shuffle drifting laterally, a body that stays tall and stops moving — the chain leaks energy and the arm is left to compensate. That compensation is where sore arms and capped velocity both come from.
The Plant-and-Line drill isolates that chain. By removing the fly ball, the route, and the target-accuracy pressure, it lets the athlete rebuild the footwork sequence cleanly and then measure the payoff.
What makes this different from a crow-hop drill
Plenty of drills teach the crow-hop as part of a full-speed outfield play — read, drop-step, sprint, field, crow-hop, throw. Those are valuable, but they bundle the footwork together with a dozen other skills, so a player never learns how much the feet alone contribute. When velocity is low, the coach cannot tell whether the problem is the read, the route, the transfer, or the throw itself.
Plant-and-Line does the opposite. It is a *constraint* drill in the truest sense: everything except the footwork sequence is stripped away. The athlete stands on a taped line aimed at a net, receives a simple self-drop, executes exactly one footwork sequence, and throws for a radar number. There is a baseline — five flat-footed, arm-only throws — and then the sequenced throws are compared against it. The gap between the two numbers is the entire lesson. When a 15-year-old sees a flat-footed 62 mph jump to 71 mph purely by fixing his feet, the point lands harder than any amount of coaching talk.
How to run it
Set a straight line of tape, chalk, or rope on the ground pointing at the middle of a throwing net 45-60 feet away. Put a radar gun behind or beside the net, aimed down the line. Give the player a small bucket of balls.
Start with the baseline: five full-intent throws from a dead stop, no footwork. Record the top reading. Then walk the sequence slowly with no ball — catch posture, a directional replace step behind and toward the target, a low momentum shuffle that stays on the line, and a firm plant with the glove-side toe pointed at the net. Add the ball at tempo, then build to four sets of five full-intent sequenced throws with about 90 seconds of rest between sets.
The non-negotiables are simple: every foot stays on or over the line, momentum always travels toward the net (never sideways), and the plant toe points at the target. Call out every radar reading so the athlete pairs the *feeling* of a clean plant with the number it produced. The success standard is concrete: on three of five sequenced reps, the reading should land within 3 mph of the player's peak and at least 4 mph above the flat-footed baseline.
Fitting it into practice
Because it is footwork-dominant and low on total throws, Plant-and-Line fits neatly into the back half of a throwing-focused practice, after arm-care and catch-play have the arm fully warm. A good sequence is: dynamic warm-up, band activation, build-up long toss, then Plant-and-Line as the intent block, then live outfield reads. Roughly 20 minutes and 25 high-intent throws is plenty — this is a quality-over-quantity drill, and stacking it on top of a full long-toss day risks overloading the arm.
It is especially useful in two windows. In the off-season, it is a mechanics-building station where players groove the sequence without game pressure. In the lead-up to a showcase, it is a tune-up: outfield velo is a headline number scouts record, and cleaning up footwork is the fastest legal way to add mph before a Perfect Game or similar event.
Progressing and regressing it
For younger players (12U-14U), keep the throwing distance short, cap the intent, and reward clean plants over big numbers. The radar gun is still useful, but frame it as "beat your own feet," not "throw as hard as possible." For high-school and college outfielders, lengthen the distance, demand full intent, and turn the success standard into a competition against their own peak.
The final progression removes the line entirely and reintroduces a rolled ground ball or a short fly, asking the athlete to keep the same plant-and-line feel while the read is added back. Re-checking velocity on the gun at that stage confirms whether the isolated footwork actually transferred to a live play — which is the whole reason to isolate it in the first place.
Safety and workload
This is a full-intent throwing drill, so treat it like any velocity work. Warm the arm completely first, respect the per-session throw count, and stop at the first sign of arm discomfort. MLB's Pitch Smart guidelines are written for pitchers, but their core principles — monitor throwing volume, build intent gradually, and prioritize rest and recovery — apply just as well to position players making max-effort throws. A radar gun tempts players to empty the tank on every rep; a coach's job is to keep the effort honest without letting it become reckless.
