Arm strength across the infield is one of the most visible tools a defender has, and at every level - youth showcases, high school tryouts, college recruiting - a hard, accurate throw from the six-hole turns hits into outs. Yet it's one of the least *deliberately trained* skills in a typical practice. Fielders take fungoes, throw a handful of balls across the diamond, and call it defense. Very few of those throws are truly clean, on-time, and at full intent. Why this drill matters
Three ingredients drive throwing velocity gains: intent, volume, and feedback. Traditional infield work usually delivers weak versions of all three. Coach-hit fungoes vary in speed and hop, so the fielder spends attention managing the bounce instead of committing to an aggressive throw. Reps are low because of shag time and lines. And there's no number attached to the throw, so "throw harder" stays a vague instruction.
A ground-ball machine (or, when equipment is limited, a partner front-tossing controlled short hops) removes the guesswork from the feed. Every ball arrives at roughly the same speed and hop, so the athlete can build a rhythm and pour energy into the transfer and throw rather than into reacting to a bad bounce. That external focus is well supported in motor-learning research: athletes throw and hit harder when their attention is on an outcome (the number, the target) rather than on their own body parts. The mechanics you're actually training
Infield throwing velocity is a ground-up, whole-body skill, not a shoulder trick. The best infield arms generate speed the same way pitchers do: they use the lower half to build momentum, transfer it up a connected kinetic chain, and release from a repeatable arm slot. This drill trains three links directly:
- Fielding out front. When the ball is caught in front of the body, the fielder's momentum is already traveling toward the target. Catch it deep, under the hips, and that momentum stalls - you're now throwing from a dead stop.
- The crow-hop. "Grab grass and get behind it." A real crow-hop lets the back hip load and the whole body move into the throw, which is where the velocity lives. Arm-only throwers cap out early and stress the elbow.
- A repeatable release. Same arm slot, every rep. Consistency here is what keeps throws on-line AND protects the arm over dozens of reps.
Because the feed is predictable, the athlete can rehearse this exact sequence over and over, grooving it under progressively more intent.
How it fits into practice
This is a targeted arm-development block, not a warmup and not an everyday grinder. Slot it into practice *after* a full dynamic warmup, band activation, and build-up catch play - never on a cold arm. It fits naturally on:
- Off-season and pre-season arm-strength days, where the goal is to add velo over weeks.
- Showcase-prep sessions, where a player wants to post a strong infield-velo number for scouts.
- In-season, sparingly, as a short intent primer early in the week, well away from game days.
Keep total max-effort volume modest: around 32 throws (4 rounds of 8) is plenty. The point is quality. A tired arm throws slower and with worse mechanics, so chasing more reps is counterproductive and raises injury risk. Watch the log - if the top-3 average drops meaningfully in the final round, that's the arm telling you to stop.
Programming it
Run four rounds of eight machine-fed grounders with 60-90 seconds of rest between rounds while balls are retrieved. Position the target at the player's real across-the-diamond distance: deep for shortstop and third base, shorter for second base and first base. Radar every throw. After each round, circle the top-3 average - that trimmed number filters out the occasional flier and gives you a stable metric to track week to week.
The success standard is deliberately not "hit your single hardest throw." It's holding or raising your top-3 average across the session *while every scored throw lands on-line at chest height.* Accuracy is the gate. A wild 80-mph throw that pulls the first baseman off the bag is a worse rep than a controlled one you can repeat in a game. Coaches should refuse to count off-line throws toward the score - that keeps intent honest and game-transferable.
How to progress it
Regress it for younger or lighter arms (12U-14U): move to partner front-toss short hops, shorten the throw distance, and use dimple or lighter training balls. Build a clean, quick transfer before layering in max intent. This respects the reality that youth arms tolerate far less high-effort volume than mature ones.
Standard is machine-fed two-hoppers at position distance with radar on every throw.
Progress it by varying the machine feed to forehand and backhand angles, forcing the fielder to range, reset their feet, and still hold their velo on the move. From there, add a pop-time constraint: start a stopwatch on the feed and require the throw under a target time while keeping inf_velo_mph within about 2 mph of the player's best. Now you're training arm strength, footwork, and quickness together - which is what the game actually demands.
Safety notes worth repeating
Max-intent throwing is a stressor. Always precede it with a thorough warmup and arm-care activation, cap the volume, and stop at any sign of pain or a sharp velocity drop. Do not run this the day after a heavy throwing or pitching workload.
