How to Cut Catcher Pop Time With a Machine-Fed Groove Drill

Pop time is one of the few catcher skills you can put a number on. It is the elapsed time from the moment a pitch hits the catcher's mitt to the moment the ball reaches the fielder's glove at second base, measured in seconds. Scouts live by it, showcases publish it, and it is the cleanest single measure of a catcher's ability to control the running game. The problem most coaches run into is not knowing *what* pop time is - it is knowing how to *train* it so the number actually improves and holds up under pressure.
This guide walks through a drill built around a simple idea: to groove a skill, you need identical, repeatable input. A pitching machine - or a crisp coach front-toss behind an L-screen - gives you exactly that, and it turns pop-time work from guesswork into deliberate practice.
Why machine or front-toss beats a live bullpen for this
When a catcher works pop times off a live pitcher, every single rep is different. One pitch is up and in, the next bounces, the next is a changeup that dies. That variety is great for game-calling and blocking practice, but it is terrible for grooving a fast, repeatable throw. If a rep is slow, the catcher and coach are left guessing: was it the catch, the exchange, the footwork, the throw, or just a lousy pitch to handle?
A machine removes that variable. Set it to deliver the same firm strike, belt-high to the middle or glove side, on a rhythm you control. Now every rep starts from the same place. The only things that change are the parts the catcher controls - the receive, the transfer, the feet, and the throw. That is what makes the pop-time number honest and what lets a catcher feel the movement pattern repeat until it becomes automatic. Motor-learning research consistently shows that clear, immediate feedback plus high-quality repetition is what builds a durable skill, and a machine delivers both far better than a variable live arm.
Front-toss is the no-tech version. A coach kneels behind an L-screen 12 to 15 feet in front of the plate and delivers a consistent, firm toss to the same spot. It is not as metronomic as a machine, but a good feeder can get close, and it has a bonus: the coach can watch the catcher's hands and feet from the front and coach in real time.
The mechanics you are actually training
Pop time breaks into three chunks, and it helps to know where the seconds hide:
- Receive and transfer (exchange). From mitt-pop to a clean four-seam grip at the throwing-side ear. This is where most amateur catchers lose the most time, and it is the cheapest place to find it - it costs no arm strength, only clean hands. Coaches often refer to catching the ball "out front" so the transfer starts moving toward the target instead of drifting back to the body.
- Footwork. A quick, direct replace or jab-step pattern that points the body straight at second base. Drifting glove-side or rocking backward adds distance and time.
- Throw. A firm, flat, four-seam carry that arrives chest-high so the middle infielder can catch and tag in one motion. Raw arm strength matters here, but accuracy and carry matter more than pure velocity for a catchable, taggable ball.
The machine-fed drill lets you attack all three under identical conditions, and - critically - lets you tell the catcher which chunk to fix, because the input never changes.
How the drill fits into a practice or lesson
This is a grooving block, not a warmup and not a game simulation. Slot it after a full arm-care and build-up throwing routine, when the arm is loose but not fatigued. Twenty minutes is plenty. Run sets of five to eight max-effort throws on a fixed cadence of one pitch every 8 to 12 seconds - long enough that each throw is genuinely max effort, short enough to keep the block tight. Between sets, read the times back, pick one thing to sharpen, and go again.
The timing piece is non-negotiable. Put a coach on the glove side with a stopwatch or a pop-time app and call the number out loud after every rep. Hearing "1.98... 2.05... 1.94" turns an abstract skill into a game the catcher wants to win, and it gives you the feedback loop that makes the grooving stick.
Keeping it safe
Full-effort throws to second are a real load on a young arm, and volume is the risk, not any single throw. National arm-health guidance from MLB and USA Baseball's Pitch Smart initiative and from the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) centers on managing total throwing volume and respecting fatigue - the same logic applies to catchers, who quietly rack up huge throw counts. Warm up and build up first, cap total max-effort throws (30 to 40 is plenty), rest between sets, and stop at the first sign of arm fatigue or soreness. This drill is best for 14U and up who have already built a throwing base; younger catchers should groove the exchange and footwork with easy throws before adding max-effort volume.
How to progress it
- Stabilize first. Keep the input identical until the catcher's times are consistent - not just fast once, but repeatable. Chasing a single fast rep teaches nothing.
- Move the target of the receive. Once times are stable on a middle strike, feed glove-side, arm-side, and low strikes so the catcher grooves the transfer from different catch points - still on identical, repeatable pitches per location.

- Track the number over weeks. Log the catcher's best three-rep average each session so you can see the trend, not just today's mood.
