The Live Bullpen Blocking Gauntlet: Building Real Block % at Game Speed

Ask a catcher to block and most of them will show you a textbook body position: knees down, chest over the ball, chin tucked, glove between the legs. It looks great. Then the game starts, a 78 mph curveball spikes two feet in front of the plate on a 2-2 count with a runner on second, and the same catcher freezes for a beat and waves at it with the glove. The ball skips to the backstop and the run scores.
That gap between the drilled position and the game outcome is almost always a speed and predictability problem, not a technique problem. Most blocking work is done slow, close, and pre-announced. The catcher knows the ball is coming and knows roughly where. The one skill the game actually taxes — reacting to a pitch you did not know was going to bounce, at real velocity — never gets trained. What block % actually measures
Block % is the share of balls in the dirt that a catcher keeps in front or contains — meaning no ball reaches the backstop and, ideally, it dies close enough to the plate that a runner can't advance. It is the cleanest single measure of blocking, because it ignores how the block *looked* and counts only whether it *worked*. A sloppy block that keeps the ball in front counts. A gorgeous drop that lets the ball squirt eight feet away does not.
That's why this drill uses block % as its lone target metric. The catcher isn't chasing a prettier position; they're chasing a higher percentage of balls contained. Everything in the drill — the live pitcher, the random dirt balls, the charting — exists to produce an honest number the catcher and coach can watch move over time.
Why "live and random" is the whole point
The two design choices that separate this from a standard blocking drill are that the balls are live (thrown, not rolled or tossed) and random (the catcher never knows which pitch bounces).
Live matters because the read starts out of the hand. In a game, elite blockers pick up spin and trajectory early and are already moving before the ball hits the dirt. You cannot train that read off a coach rolling a ball from ten feet — there's no arm action, no release, no flight. A live pitcher (or a machine a partner tips short on a hidden signal) restores the real visual sequence.
Random matters because predictability lets the body cheat. If a catcher knows the next ball is going in the dirt, they pre-load and drop early — and their block % in practice looks fantastic and means nothing. Mixing roughly one dirt ball into every three pitches, scattered so there's no rhythm to time, forces a genuine react-and-decide on every single pitch. That uncertainty is the training stimulus. It's also why the score in this drill tends to start lower than a catcher expects, which is a good thing: you're finally measuring the real skill.
How the drill fits into a practice
This is a live-arm, full-gear, high-impact drill, so treat it like a bullpen, not a warmup. Slot it into a catching block after the catcher is loose and has done receiving work, and while a pitcher is throwing a normal bullpen anyway — the pitcher's dirt balls double as blocking reps, so you get two sessions for the price of one. Fifteen to twenty minutes is plenty. Because of the repeated impact, cap it: three to five blocks of ten dirt balls, with real rest between blocks. Chasing volume past that point just accumulates bruises and breaks down the mechanics you're trying to reinforce.
A charting partner is non-negotiable if you want the metric to mean anything. Give them a clicker or a phone and one job: mark every ball that hits the dirt as "in front" or "got by." Read the running block % out loud after each block of ten. Catchers compete with a number they can hear.
How to run it well
Gear up completely. Mask, chest protector, shin guards, cup, and mitt. This drill puts hard balls in the dirt on purpose; there is no version of it that's safe without full equipment.
Keep the feeder honest. The single most common way this drill goes wrong is the pitcher or machine operator falling into a pattern — every third pitch, always to the same side. The catcher's body learns the pattern within a few reps and the score inflates. Hand the feeder a simple randomizer (a shuffled set of cards, a random number on a phone) so even they don't know until the moment.
Score containment, not just the backstop. Set cones about eight feet to each side of the catcher. A block that stays inside the cones is contained and counts as "in front." A ball that ends up outside the cones counts as "got by" even if it never reached the net — because in a game, that ball let the runner advance. This makes block % reflect game consequences, not just whether the backstop got hit.
Cue the read and the recovery. The two moments catchers lose are the start (reacting late, off the bounce instead of out of the hand) and the finish (popping up before the ball is dead). "Read it out of the hand" and "recover and reset" bracket the rep. In between, the classic cues hold: chest to the ball, chin down, fill the five-hole, deaden it with soft shoulders.
How to progress it
Start catchers at Level 1 — reduced velocity, dirt balls center-cut only — so they build confidence getting the chest behind the ball before you add lateral demand. Move to Level 2 at full velocity with dirt balls to both corners on a random ratio; this is the standard working version. Level 3 adds a live runner on second with a real secondary lead, and any ball that gets by lets the runner advance — now the block % has stakes and the catcher feels game pressure. Level 4 turns it into a competition: two catchers alternate blocks of ten and post their block %, tracked week to week against age-group benchmarks.
Those benchmarks give you honest targets. Blocking skill climbs steeply with age and reps — a strong 14U catcher contains most balls in front, while a college-level catcher is expected to contain the large majority even at high velocity. Use your own program's benchmark table to set each catcher's goal, and celebrate movement in the number rather than a single session's score. A catcher who goes from the low 70s to consistently over 80% block % on live, random reps has made a real, game-transferable gain — not a prettier practice position, but more balls kept in front when a run is on the line.
