How to Increase Exit Velocity at Home With a Radar Peak-Chase Ladder

Exit velocity is the number that travels. College recruiters, showcase evaluators, and pro scouts all lean on peak exit velo because it is one of the most stable, hard-to-fake signals of a hitter's power. The good news for developing players and their coaches: you do not need a $20,000 launch monitor or a rented cage to train and measure it. With a tee, something safe to hit into, and a radar that costs less than a good bat, a hitter can chase a true peak in the garage or driveway. This guide walks coaches through the Garage Radar Peak-Chase drill — why it works, how to run it, and how to progress it — so at-home reps actually move the number that matters.
Why exit velocity is worth chasing
Exit velocity is the speed of the ball off the bat, and it is the product of two things a hitter controls: how fast the barrel is moving and how squarely it meets the ball. Player-development groups such as Driveline Baseball have written extensively about the tight relationship between bat speed, barrel accuracy, and batted-ball outcomes — harder contact means more distance, more line drives that find grass, and a higher ceiling on damage. Unlike a hot streak of batting average, peak exit velo is repeatable and measurable, which is exactly why it shows up on every showcase report.
The key word for training is peak. Average exit velocity tells you about consistency, but the number that opens doors is a hitter's ceiling — the hardest ball they can hit on their best swing. That distinction drives how this drill is built: fewer, louder, fully measured swings instead of grinding out a bucket of medium contact.
The two ingredients: a momentum load and an effort ladder
Most at-home hitting reps quietly cap a player's power because they are done flat-footed off a stationary tee with no intent. This drill fixes both problems.
The gather-and-go load. Instead of standing still, the hitter gathers their weight over the back hip and takes a controlled stride into the swing, so momentum is moving toward the ball at contact. That forward momentum, stopped abruptly by a braced front leg, is one of the biggest free sources of power in a swing. Force production research from sports-science groups and the emphasis on ground reaction force in hitting instruction both point to the same idea: hitters who transfer energy from the ground up, and then brace to redirect it into rotation, produce more bat speed. The stride-in makes that transfer something a player can feel in the garage.
The effort ladder. You cannot find a ceiling by swinging at the ceiling cold. The drill climbs in three steps — a feel round at 60-70%, a build round at 80-85%, then several max rounds at 100%+. This protects the athlete (max-effort rotational swings on cold obliques and hips are a strain risk) and, just as important, teaches the nervous system to ramp into a true max rather than a tense, muscled-up lunge. Chasing the peak on the back half of the ladder, when the body is primed, is where the highest numbers show up.
Why the radar changes everything
Feel lies. A swing that feels violent is often just tense, and a swing that feels effortless is often the one that reads hottest. When a hitter reads the number out loud after every max swing, three things happen: they compete against their own best number, they stop confusing effort with output, and they learn which swings actually produce. How to fit it into practice
The drill runs in about 20 minutes and slots neatly into an off-season or in-season routine:
- Warm-up (5 min): general movement, band or arm-circle work, and 10-15 easy tee swings. This is non-negotiable before max-intent rotation.
- Ladder (12-13 min): one feel round, one build round, then three to four max rounds of five swings, logging the single hardest reading of each max round.
- Cool-down and log (2 min): record the day's peak and the setup conditions.
Because it needs almost no space or equipment, it is ideal as a between-lessons home assignment. A coach can hand a player a target number and a simple log, and the athlete can chase it two or three times a week at home, then bring the trend line back to the next session.
Coaching the movement
The cues that matter most: gather then go (load quietly, then move momentum forward), brace the front leg to fire the barrel (a stiff front side converts the stride into bat speed instead of drift), and hard line into the target (a screaming line drive is where exit velo peaks — a chopped grounder or pop-up means the barrel missed the middle of the ball). If bat speed looks good but the number lags, the miss is almost always barrel accuracy, not effort.
The most common failure is drifting — sliding forward through contact with a soft front leg, which bleeds off the very momentum the load created. The second is chasing average: too many medium swings bury the true peak under fatigue. Keep rounds short, effort high, and end the session on a rising number.
How to progress it
Start off the tee so the hitter can repeat the load and read a clean number every swing. Once the gather-and-go is automatic, add a partner front toss into the same spot to chase the peak on a moving ball. To reinforce driving through contact, alternate a max round with the game bat against a round with a slightly heavier bat or bat sleeve, then re-check the number with the game bat. Re-test every two to three weeks under identical conditions; the logged peak-exit-velo trend line is the proof of progress — and a clean data point for showcase prep.
Safety notes
Max-effort rotational swings with a forward stride load the hips and obliques hard. Always warm up first, wear grippy shoes so a hard stride does not slip on concrete, keep 8-10 feet to a ball-absorbing target with no people, pets, cars, or windows nearby, and stop the session once fatigue makes swings long and slow. For younger athletes, follow the general strength-and-conditioning guidance echoed by USA Baseball and the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI): prioritize movement quality and adequate recovery over volume, and let the youngest safe age here be roughly 14U for full max-intent power work.
