Front-Toss Full-Send: Training Max Bat Speed on a Moving Ball

Ask a hitter to swing as hard as they can off a tee and most will show you a bat-speed number that looks great. Put a ball in motion — front-toss, a machine, live BP — and that same hitter often gives back 3 to 6 mph. The barrel that was fast in a static drill suddenly slows down the instant the athlete has to time and locate a moving ball. Front-Toss Full-Send is built to close exactly that gap: it trains a hitter to hold their peak bat speed when the ball is actually coming at them.
Why this drill matters
Bat speed is one of the most direct inputs to hitting for power. All else equal, a faster barrel produces higher exit velocity, which produces more damage and more margin for slightly mistimed contact. Driveline Baseball and other player-development groups have popularized bat speed as a specifically trainable quality — not a fixed gift — through intent-based and overload/underload work. But there's a catch that shows up constantly in the cage: intent leaks out under game-like conditions.
Hitters slow down to make contact. They get long and steer the barrel toward the ball. They tense up trying to be 'on time.' The result is a swing that measures fast in a controlled setting and plays slow against a pitcher. If a hitter's tee bat speed is 70 mph but their moving-ball bat speed is 64, the 70 is mostly a lab number. The point of this drill is to make the two match.
Front-toss and pitching machines are the perfect environment for that. They give you a predictable, repeatable, hittable feed — you control speed, location, and rhythm — so the only variable that should change is whether the hitter commits to full intent. Pair that controllable feed with an objective bat-speed sensor and the hitter gets instant, honest proof of whether they let it eat or throttled down.
The mechanics: one target, measured
The drill lives or dies on measuring the right thing. The single target metric is bat speed in mph, read off a sensor such as Blast Motion or Diamond Kinetics. Not exit velocity, not launch angle, not ball flight — just how fast the barrel is moving through the hitting zone.
Start every session with a tee baseline: five max-intent swings off a tee, recording the hitter's peak bat speed. This is the reference number. The tee removes timing and location from the equation, so it shows you the hitter's near-ceiling for that day. Everything in the moving-ball rounds is measured against it.
Then you feed the ball. Front-toss from one knee behind an L-screen at roughly 15 to 18 feet is the most controllable option and a good starting point. A pitching machine set to a comfortable, repeatable speed works just as well and removes the human variance in the feed. Either way, the feed should be firm and hittable — middle-middle strikes the hitter can attack. The hitter's job is one sentence: swing at 100% intent on every green-light pitch. Where the ball goes is irrelevant in the early rounds.
How it fits into practice
Because bat speed is a max-effort, central-nervous-system quality, this is a fresh-legs drill, not a fatigue drill. Program it early in a hitting block, after a proper warm-up, when the athlete is fresh. It slots naturally into a power-development day alongside overload/underload bat work or med-ball rotational throws.
Keep the volume modest and the rest real: four rounds of eight swings, with a genuine 45 to 60 seconds of rest between rounds. That rest is not optional. If rounds run back-to-back, the late-round numbers reflect fatigue rather than intent, and you lose the ability to read whether the hitter is actually holding speed. Thirty-two quality max-intent swings will do more for bat speed than a hundred moderate ones.
The feedback loop is what makes it stick. After each round, the hitter looks at the sensor: what was the peak, and how many swings landed within 2 mph of the tee baseline? That number turns an abstract instruction ('swing hard') into a concrete, gamified target the athlete can chase and beat.
Coaching cues that work
The language matters here more than in most drills, because you are fighting a hitter's instinct to protect contact. A few cues that consistently unlock speed:
- 'Let it eat.' The hitter has explicit permission to swing hard. The controlled feed is the safety net.
- 'Same swing as the tee.' The number should not drop just because the ball started moving.
- 'Beat the ball to the spot.' Commit early so the hitter isn't decelerating to make a late adjustment.
- 'Loud first, on-time follows.' Speed is the priority; timing gets fixed with reps, not by slowing down.
Notice what is NOT on that list: 'slow down to hit it.' That instruction, however well-intentioned, is the exact habit this drill is designed to break.
Common mistakes to watch for
The most common failure is the hitter steering the barrel to force contact. You'll see it in the sensor: contact improves, bat speed drops. Remind them the target is the number, and contact follows the fast, committed swing over time. The second is a coaching error — feeding too hard or off-location, which turns an attack drill into a defense drill. Keep the feed hittable. Third, skipping rest. Fourth, drifting attention to exit velo or ball flight instead of the one metric. And finally, skipping the tee baseline, which leaves you with no honest reference for whether the moving-ball swing actually held up.
How to progress it
Build difficulty in layers, always keeping the same rule — full intent on every green-light pitch. Begin with front-toss (most controllable), advance to a machine, then bump machine velocity 3 to 5 mph once the hitter reliably holds their peak at the current speed. Next, add a light velocity mix or an occasional 'take' so the hitter has to recognize a strike and still commit fully — this is where the skill starts to transfer to live pitching. You can also fold in overload/underload bats on the calibration round, then return to the game bat and re-check whether the number climbed. The end stage is randomized short-front flips at varying locations, holding the same standard.
Done consistently, Front-Toss Full-Send turns a lab-only bat-speed number into one the hitter owns against a moving ball — which is the only place it counts.
