Velocity in fastpitch isn't an accident, and it isn't one magic move. The windmill fastball is a chain: the legs start it, the body transfers it, and the wrist finishes it. When pitchers chase speed they usually grab at one link — heaving the arm faster or muscling the ball — and the chain breaks. The pitches get wild, the radar gun doesn't move, and the pitcher gets frustrated.

Why the windmill is different
The windmill delivery carries the arm through a full 360-degree circle below the shoulder. The wrist snap: where speed and spin are born
The snap of the wrist and the push of the fingers at release is one of the most important actions in windmill pitching. A clean, late snap does two things at once:
- It adds the final burst of speed as the ball leaves the hand.
- It puts backspin on the ball, which creates carry and late life through the zone.
The most common mistake is pushing the ball instead of snapping it. A muscled, early release feels powerful but actually kills the late whip that produces velocity and spin. The fix is to keep the wrist relaxed through the circle and let it flick — not shove — through the ball at the bottom. A useful mental cue: "flick, don't push," finishing with the fingers pointing up and out toward the target.

The leg drive: the engine that feeds the arm
A fast arm with no legs is just an arm. In the windmill, a strong leg drive off the rubber transfers into a firm stride-foot plant, and that plant transfers energy up through the body and into the whip of the arm. Two things matter most:
- An explosive push off the rubber toward the plate.
- A firm, slightly flexed front leg that blocks and stops the body so the energy snaps up the chain into the arm.
The killers here are a soft or collapsing front leg (the energy dies in the legs) and drifting onto that front leg instead of blocking against it. A common coaching cue is "block, don't drift" — the firmer the front side, the more whip the arm gets for free.
Putting it together: the snap-and-drive drill

No ball, no arm — just the legs. Drive off the rubber, land on a firm front leg over a tape mark, and hold the finish for a one-count. Check that your back hip finishes toward the target and your stride is straight, not crossed or open. Repeat until the push is both powerful and balanced.
Phase 3 — Re-couple
Now throw full pitches to a catcher at distance and stitch the pieces together with one cue: "drive, block, snap." Call out a target before each pitch so command rides along with the new speed. The point isn't to throw 100 pitches — it's to make every rep a connected, full-intent pitch.
Don't forget command
Velocity that can't find the zone is a tryout, not a pitch. The same things that create speed — a repeatable circle and a consistent snap — are also what create command. Coaches often cue "same circle, same snap, same effort" on every pitch and every location. Build the connected delivery first, then chase the zone with a 9-spot target grid, and the speed will hold up because it's repeatable.
Adding the velocity layer
Once the full pitch feels connected and you're warmed up, you can introduce a contrast-load progression: a set of pitches with a slightly heavier ball, a set with a lighter ball, then a set with a regulation ball, keeping the same drive and snap throughout. Training the arm at both ends of the speed spectrum can help it learn to move faster. Two non-negotiables: never throw weighted balls cold, and stop the moment your mechanics or snap quality break down. Speed built on broken mechanics doesn't last and invites injury.
How to know it's working
Progress in this drill is measurable. Track your peak fastball velocity with a radar gun and your strike percentage over several weeks. If the snap-and-drive work is landing, you should see both climb — more MPH and more strikes, because the same connected delivery is producing both.
