Pitch Tunneling and Sequencing the Fastball-Changeup Pair: A Coach's Guide

A young pitcher with a decent fastball and a simple changeup already owns everything they need to miss bats — if the two pitches look the same coming out of the hand. That sameness is the whole game. The skill is called pitch tunneling, and it is the reason a 75-mph fastball and a 65-mph changeup can play like a much nastier arsenal. This guide explains how tunneling works and how the fastball-changeup tunnel pairs command drill trains it.
What tunneling actually means
A hitter cannot wait for the ball to arrive before deciding to swing — there is not enough time. They commit early, based on the picture the ball makes in the first 15–20 feet of flight. Tunneling exploits that. If two different pitches travel through the same small window early — the same 'tunnel' — the hitter has to commit before the pitches separate. The fastball-changeup pair is the perfect youth tunnel. Both come from the same arm action, so when the release height, arm speed, and early path match, the hitter reads 'fastball,' starts their swing — and the changeup arrives late, slow, and diving. The deception is not in the changeup's break; it is in how long it impersonates the fastball.
Why the release point is everything
The most common way pitchers blow the tunnel is by changing something other than the grip. The instant the release point rises, the arm slows, or the arm slot shifts, the two pitches leave the hand on different lines and the hitter can separate them early. The whole coaching emphasis is sameness: stride, trunk rotation, and release should look identical, so the only difference is what the grip does to the ball after it is already on its way. A changeup that starts on the same line and then fades down and arm-side in the last third of flight is the textbook outcome.
How the drill builds it
The drill makes 'same path' objective instead of a feeling. A ribbon, tape strip, or thin rod is hung 15–20 feet out at letter height to mark a tunnel window, and the pitcher throws fastball-changeup 'pairs' that must both pass through that window. A catcher or partner watches from behind and calls whether the two pitches looked the same out of the hand — if they can tell early, the fix is the release, not the aim. Filming from the pitcher's view and overlaying the two clips makes it vivid: you want the pitches stacked for the first third of the flight, then splitting. Age-appropriateness
This is an excellent youth drill precisely because it uses only the two pitches young arms should be throwing. MLB/USA Baseball Pitch Smart lists fastballs and change-ups as the recommended pitch types for the 9–12 group and advises adding breaking pitches only later, after a consistent fastball and changeup (source). Tunneling teaches a young pitcher to win with command and deception rather than reaching for a curveball too early. It is low-stress on the arm — there is no max-effort or breaking-ball component — and it doubles as command work, which is the single most valuable thing a youth pitcher can develop. Keep the effort moderate, the targets defined, and the focus on sameness out of the hand.
Common mistakes
Watch first for the release point drifting up on the changeup — that is the silent tunnel-killer. Watch for the arm slowing down, which both tips the change and lifts its early path. Do not let a pitcher aim the changeup at the dirt; it has to share the window first and dive late, not start low. Inconsistent arm slot between the two pitches will give the tunnel away. And random practice undermines the whole point — pairs should be thrown to a defined window so 'same tunnel' is measured, not guessed.
